RESUMO

O propósito deste ensaio é entender o personagem Juvenal, escritor satírico do início do século II de nossa era, traçando um perfil a partir de algumas sátiras e dos dados transmitidos pela tradição historiográfica e anedótica. Buscamos aqui comparar a fortuna da personalidade do satírico romano com alguns de seus escritos e submeter, numa apresentação um tanto livre, a imagem resultante a alguns critérios críticos de pensamento, para melhor entender esse escritor latino tão enérgico, tão vivo, e por que não dizer, tão atual, haja vista que, mesmo se debruçando sobre o comportamento humano de sua época, ele traz à luz, na verdade, aspectos da alma do homem comum que podem ser aplicados em quaisquer épocas posteriores da história privada do homem, por conta do caráter abstrato desses aspectos.

SUMMARY

The purpose of this essay is to understand the character Juvenal, satirical writer of the early second century of our era, tracing a profile from some satires and the data transmitted by the historiographical and anecdotal tradition. We seek here to compare the fortune of the Roman satirist’s personality with some of his writings and to submit, in a somewhat free presentation, the resulting image to some critical thinking criteria, in order to better understand this Latin writer so energetic, so alive, and why not to say, so current, given the fact that, even though he dwelt on the human behavior of his time, he actually brings to light aspects of the common man’s soul that can be applied to any subsequent epoch of man’s private history, because of the abstract character of these aspects.
