A LITERATURA MÉDICA COMO FONTE PARA ESTUDOS SOCIOLINGUÍSTICOS E HISTÓRICOS: O CASO DA POLYANTHEA MEDICINAL, DE JOÃO CURVO SEMEDO RESUMO A Sociolinguística Histórica surge em final dos anos 1980 com o objetivo de observar e explicar a ocorrência de fenômenos linguísticos variáveis em sincronias pretéritas. Nesta perspectiva, busca-se identificar fatores estruturais e sociais que estejam atuando na realização de tais fenômenos. Para tanto, é necessário recorrer-se a textos escritos de períodos mais antigos das línguas, uma vez que não se tem mais acesso a falantes desses períodos. Além disso, é preciso investigar o contexto social e histórico em que os documentos foram produzidos. Neste trabalho, defende-se o uso de fontes de diversas (documentos oficiais, particulares, reliogiosos etc), especialmente as da área médica, e examinam-se indícios de variação grafemática e de variação linguística. Nesse sentido, foi escolhida a obra Polyanthea Medicinal (5ª impressão, 1741), do renomado médico português João Curvo Semedo. PALAVRAS-CHAVESociolinguística Histórica. Fontes médicas. SUMMARY Historical Sociolinguistics emerged in the late 1980s with the aim of observing and explaining the occurrence of variable linguistic phenomena in past synchronies. From this perspective, it seeks to identify structural and social factors that are at work in the realization of such phenomena. To this end, it is necessary to resort to written texts from earlier periods of the languages, since we no longer have access to speakers of these periods. In addition, it is necessary to investigate the social and historical context in which the documents were produced. In this paper, we advocate the use of diverse sources (official documents, private documents, religious documents, etc.), especially those from the medical field, and examine evidence of grapheme variation and linguistic variation. In this sense, the work Polyanthea Medicinal (5th printing, 1741), by the renowned Portuguese physician João Curvo Semedo, was chosen. KEY-WORDS Historical Sociolinguistics. Medical sources.
